The key to successful outsourcing is a long-term partnership. Many outsourcing ventures have failed due to an unsuccessful relationship between partners. Many companies outsource simply for the much hyped promise of greater returns, failing to consider other aspects of outsourcing that hold more importance such as building solid partnerships with the outsourcing provider.

Share the Risks and Benefits

Be very specific and deliberate when defining your requirements and expectations as a client. Likewise, give the same attention and consideration to your partner’s concerns. This will give you equal footing in the business venture and enable you to share both the risks and benefits with your partner. Appropriate penalties should be agreed upon and established for when service level are not reached. More importantly, if you’re meeting or exceeding the defined goals and expectations, make sure that accolades are shared appropriately.

Give Feedback

Give constant feedback. If you like the work output of your outsourcing partner, send out praise to recognize their efforts. This will go a long way in empowering and inspiring your partner to work harder and do better for the business. Likewise, if they aren’t meeting your expectations, be specific in your feedback about what it is that don’t satisfy you. Constantly giving feedback—be it the good or the bad kind— will help shape the business results that you want.

It’s easy to be seduced by the glitter of immediate savings offered by outsourcing. However, if you’re a business looking to outsource business processes to an outsourcing service provider, there are several aspects you need to watch out for. You might be ready to outsource but it’s important to understand what matters most in an outsourcing partnership.

More than the Savings

Saving money should only be a part of— and not everything— of what outsourcing providers offer in their services. It is easy to find the cheapest outsourcing services but simply selecting the cheapest doesn’t necessarily mean quality. You might later regret your choice when your service connections goes down or when your customers stop calling due to poor customer service.

Breaking the Conventional

Having many years of experience of proven track record is well and good; however, you don’t really want a stagnant outsourcing service provider that still does all the conventional stuff monotonously. You need an outsourcing partner that constantly pursues innovation in all aspects of operation and service delivery.

Equal Economic Stakes

You might think that company size is a minor thing that doesn’t really affect your choice of outsourcing service providers but the truth is it’s one of the more important aspects to consider especially when you’re still a small company. Avoid the problem of “the tail wagging the dog” associated with working with a large established outsourcing service provider. It is generally advisable to select a company with an economic stake in the shared project that is equal to yours. In this way, you share the same risks and the same gains at the outcome of the shared project.

Selecting the right outsourcing partner requires much analysis and deliberation. Of course, there are factors such as cost optimization, information and communications technology infrastructure, and others that have to be considered. However, the factors discussed above are just as important especially in forming an outsourcing business relationship that is mutually beneficial in the truest essence of partnership.
