Electronic medical records (EMR) are records of patients kept on a computer rather than on paper which is the traditional medium of patient histories. Computerized records has a number of advantages compared to the traditional paper records as data tends to be more accurate – electronic records eliminates the possibility of mistakes as a result of misreading doctor’s handwriting.

1. Easy storage taking less space compared to the conventional paper records.

2. Accessible to healthcare providers as well as to a numebr of healthcare providers at a time.

3. Cost savings as storing electronic records is proven efficient compared to paper records.

4. Is portable and transferrable from one healthcare practitioner’s office to another.

Disadvantages

1. Incidence of computer or systems crashes causes records to be inaccessible.

2. Security and privacy issues. Patient records can be compromised just by computer or system hacking.

3. Incompatibility with systems on care providers thus leading to difficulty in sharing data.

4. High cost as per systems in the implementation of electronic records.
