In his article published on The Sauce BPO News, Shaun Polovin – one of four founding directors at Sydney’s award winning ecommerce and digital marketing agency Netstarter – differentiated the difference between outsourcing and offshoring, and the risks involved. “Outsourcing” is the process of allocating a portion of your business operations to an external entity; “offshoring” simply means sending business operations in another country where the dollar generally has higher value.

Speaking of his organization’s experience with outsourcing and offshoring, he offered the following tips for any organization looking to engage in offshore outsourcing:

1. Infrastructure

It is indeed cheaper to set up operations in popular offshore locations like the Philippines, however, this does not undermine the importance of infrastructure investments such as internet lines, communications equipment, computers, etc.

2. Recruitment and Training

Staff turnover is a serious issue in popular offshore locations, and if not addressed proactively, this could affect service quality. Ensure you hire and keep the right talent resources by establishing both internal and external training programs. Treat your external team as you would your in-house employees. Orient them into your brand with your corporate values, rewards, recognition schemes, company policies, career progression programs and other employee engagement activities.

3. Agile Development Methodology

Polovin also recommended running an Agile Development Methodology, which is “a group of software development methods based on iterative and incremental development.” This ensures frequent reviews of the project progress.

4. Transparency

Proper communication and transparency is imperative when running business operations, and it is even more so in offshore outsourcing. Maintaining transparency and good communication with your external team fosters trust and collaboration.

5. Management Team

Polovin cited this as one of the real factors that drive success in offshore outsourcing. Unless you or a business partner is prepared to move overseas, you will need to find a management team that you can trust to become your representative overseas.
